Chapter 12: Dynamic Dark Energy (DESI)
[!WARNING] Tier-Disciplined Epistemic Status:
- Equation of State (): Tier 3 phenomenological channel-shape hypothesis. Structurally motivated by phason inertia, but externally tested against DESI/Euclid CPL fits rather than promoted by fit quality.
- Energy Density Magnitude (): Tier 2 area-law susceptibility identity + Tier 3 absolute magnitude. V2 Ch14 §14.1.5 supplies the holographic area-law identification of ; the absolute scale remains consistency-checked against Planck-anchored and , pending Open Problem O.4/O.1.
- Biogenic-DE calibrated quantities: , , channel weights, and shape-menu amplitudes are Tier 3 fits or diagnostics. They address the dynamical evolution , not a first-principles derivation of the absolute dark-energy scale.
For decades, the Standard Model of Cosmology (CDM) has relied on the postulate that Dark Energy is a static Cosmological Constant ()—an immutable energy density of empty space with a fixed equation of state . Geometric Consciousness Theory (GCT) treats this as the baseline area-law state plus a Tier 3 biogenic-channel fingerprint that may correlate late-time informational activity with a small phantom-side deviation. Dark Energy is not claimed here to be causally produced by terrestrial biology; the chapter analyzes the registered biogenic channel shape and its explicit external-data tension with the DESI DR2 CPL fit.
12.1 The Equation of State: The Sustained Phantom Phase [Tier 3 Phenomenological]
Registered observables: The two chapter-level observables are the phantom-side distinguishability threshold of the biogenic channel and the Shapley dipole anisotropy. They are statistically independent: the phantom-side signature tests the phason activation timescale, while the Shapley dipole tests the spatial orientation of the biogenic strain field.
12.1.1 DES-Dovekie Recalibrated DESI Observations ()
The DES-Dovekie recalibrated DESI DR2 + CMB target (arXiv:2511.07517), using Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) as a standard ruler, strengthens the external-data test of dynamic dark energy. The recalibrated CPL central fit at joint dynamical-DE significance 3.2σ is sign-opposite to the GCT single-channel biogenic pipeline : the external fit prefers quintessence-today evolving more phantom in the past, while GCT predicts a continuous phantom-side asymptote from below. The literal CPL crossing and the GCT asymptote can both be tested by Roman/Euclid-class precision, but they are not the same model. The GCT biogenic-DE reading is therefore a live external-data tension with DES-Dovekie-calibrated DESI, not confirmation by DESI. The tension is calibration-robust: the official DESI DR2 release reports the CPL departure from CDM at for BAO+CMB and across the – range when supernova samples are added, and every supernova calibration lands in the same quintessence-today, more-phantom-past quadrant (, ) opposite to the GCT single-channel asymptote. The DES-Dovekie figure is the recalibrated central anchor, not the upper edge of the adverse evidence.
12.1.2 Evidence for and the Phantom Phase
The most significant feature for GCT is that DESI DR2 does not match the single-channel biogenic direction: its CPL central fit is quintessence-like today () with a more-phantom past trend (), whereas the GCT biogenic-DE pipeline asymptotes to from below with . The observational-distinguishability threshold for the GCT channel is the V7' Class-2 envelope [Tier 3], not a DESI-amplitude claim. The " crossing" language is a CPL-fit artifact, not a mathematical zero of in the GCT curve. In standard General Relativity, a true fluid with violates the Null Energy Condition (NEC) and typically implies "ghost" instabilities—negative kinetic energy states that threaten the stability of the vacuum.
12.1.3 DES-Dovekie-Calibrated DESI vs Single-Channel Biogenic: External-Data Tension on CPL Sign [Tier 2 mechanism + Tier 3 specific shape; state-level CPL-fit gate awaiting DESI + Euclid/Roman]
The DES-Dovekie recalibrated DESI DR2 + CMB CPL target (arXiv:2511.07517) gives in the sign-opposite quadrant — a quintessence-today, evolving-more-phantom-in-the-past signature (, ). The GCT single-channel biogenic-DE engine output (IMP-01 pipeline, protocol_imp01_pipeline.py, headline run) is — i.e., the biogenic channel sits in the continuous phantom phase ( throughout, asymptoting to from below; no literal crossing) with . The two dispositions are sign-opposite on both CPL parameters, and the disposition must be read as a live external-data tension on the state-level CPL-fit gate, not as confirming evidence of the Biogenic Drive.
The multi-channel shape-proxy diagnostic closure path (Copeland-Sami-Tsujikawa 2006; Ch14 §14.6.3) is the natural arbitration mechanism, but CLOSURE-FAILS for the registered five-channel admixture (App H O.13 closure paths C1/C2/C3 open): every channel in the registered menu carries , so the convex-combination ceiling on also lies at — below the DES-Dovekie central value used by the diagnostic. The 4032-point sensitivity sweep over implemented in GCT_Physics_Engine/src/protocol_de_multichannel.py returns a best-fit diagonal diagnostic score against the DES-Dovekie target and is flat to within score units across the entire defensible range . The analytic ceiling, not the diagnostic score, supplies the menu-level closure failure including the limit.
Scope of the §12.1.3 disposition. The Tier 2 mechanism-level claim that the biogenic-DE channel sources a sign-determined phantom-direction signature is preserved as a single-channel structural prediction (Ch14 §14.1.2 + §14.6.3 + App H O.13). What is in tension with DESI is the state-level CPL-fit arbitration under the registered multi-channel shape-proxy partition. Closure requires a GCT-derivable dark-energy channel carrying quintessence-today behavior over the DESI window — for example, a thawing-quintessence channel sourced by a sub-horizon-tracking phason mode. No such channel is included in the registered five-channel menu; whether one is derivable from the broader GCT lawscape is the residual open question, registered as Open Problem O.13 (Ch14 §14.6.3 + App H O.13) and not foreclosed by the present chapter.
Falsification gate. If DESI + Euclid/Roman confirm the sign-opposite CPL region at , the present biogenic-DE state-level CPL-fit reconciliation is falsified at the multi-channel shape-proxy closure path; the law-level phantom-direction claim from a single channel remains testable independently via Roman Space Telescope joint-bin analysis across (§12.4.3 below). The full disposition is registered at App R §R.8 row 8 as a live external-data tension awaiting DESI + Euclid/Roman arbitration.
12.1.4 — JWST High-z Tension as a Binary Gate for τ_bio [Tier 3]
The Tension: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has revealed unexpectedly massive, morphologically mature galaxies at ( Myr after the Big Bang), substantially ahead of Λ-CDM predictions. If high-complexity stellar populations capable of hosting biospheres existed well before , the Biogenic Dark Energy model's evolutionary lag parameter – Gyr [Tier 3] faces pressure.
The Binary Gate: The Biogenic Hypothesis makes the single calibrated parameter [Tier 3] that maps stellar formation history to the phantom-phase distinguishability-threshold redshift. This parameter can be independently constrained:
- Obtain the JWST-revised galaxy stellar mass function for
- Compute the time-integrated stellar complexity
- Find the that places the peak of at the DESI phantom-phase distinguishability threshold ()
- Compare this derived with the independently estimated time for technological civilization to emerge after star formation
Prediction: If the JWST galaxy mass function is used as input, GCT predicts must lie in the range 3.5–6 Gyr [Tier 3]. If independent astrophysical constraints on biosphere emergence times require outside this window, the Biogenic correlation hypothesis is falsified independent of dark energy observations.
Status: This test is currently pending dedicated analysis. The JWST galaxy data already exists; only the integrated SFR computation is required.

12.2 The Cross-Manifold Work Model
12.2.1 Biogenic Hypothesis: Complexity Vacuum Winding
In the GCT Operating System, the physical manifold () is an Open System. The act of Selection (rendering experience) is an active informational process that generates physical bits. To record this history, the Agent performs metabolic work to "wind" the phason field (). This winding acts as a Geometric Spring, storing elastic potential energy in the vacuum hardware.
12.2.2 The Resolution of the Phantom Pathology
The apparent violation of the Null Energy Condition () is modeled as a signature of Cross-Manifold Work in the Tier 3 biogenic-channel ansatz. The "Ghost" instability is avoided within the model because the channel is treated as an effective lattice-susceptibility response rather than a fundamental negative-kinetic-energy fluid. This is a correlation/fingerprint model for a tiny phantom-side deviation, not a chapter-level causal claim that biological work powers cosmic expansion.
12.2.3 The Cosmological vs. Biological Arrow of Time
The Cosmological Arrow (expansion) and the Biological Arrow (evolution) are compared as parallel conversions of implicit potential into explicit information. The sustained phantom-phase deviation (the GCT-consistent reading per §12.1.2 — asymptoting to from below, not literally crossing) is the registered Tier 3 channel fingerprint under that analogy; it should not be read as a demonstrated causal history of cosmic acceleration.
12.3 The Dark Energy Lagrangian [Tier 3]
12.3.1 The Coupling Term (Phenomenological)
We formalize the biogenic correlation by introducing an illustrative coupling term into the action for the scalar phason field , representing the volumetric density of the internal dimensions.
The GCT Dark Energy Lagrangian (Illustrative):
Where:
- : The aggregate Information Generation Rate of the collective Selection Operators.
- : The Lattice Update Rate (), the maximum bit-rate supported by the lattice hardware.
- : The dimensionless coupling constant.
12.3.2 Motivation:
The heuristic term acts as a Variable Inertia for the vacuum expansion. This models how, if the complexity of the universe is accelerating (), the vacuum's resistance to expansion becomes effectively negative. This speculative Anti-Damping correlation maps to the sustained phantom-phase deviation (the GCT-consistent reading; underlying , no literal crossing). The universe accelerates faster precisely as the "Software" (Complexity) is growing faster than the "Hardware" (Lattice) can relax, though quantitative magnitude predictions overshoot drastically.
12.3.3 The Susceptibility Constant ()
GCT identifies the vacuum as a system near a phase transition with a susceptibility defined by the Holographic Entanglement Entropy of the de Sitter cosmic event horizon (V2 Ch14 §14.1.5) [Tier 2 — upgraded via Ryu-Takayanagi derivation]:
Holographic Derivation: The susceptibility represents the Total Computational Capacity of the observable portion of the projection, identified as the holographic information capacity of the de Sitter horizon. The Tier 2 content is the area-law functional form; the numerical evaluation imports and pending O.1/O.4. See V2 Ch14 §14.1.5 for the full derivation. The canonical dark-energy density form is ; it is a Friedmann/area-law consistency check, not a closed derivation of the observed density from the current postulate set.
This represents the number of Planck-scale "Computational Cycles" executed since crystallization. The effect of Dark Energy becomes visible because the accumulation of biogenic bits scales against this macroscopic susceptibility. (The canonical derivation is the Ryu-Takayanagi route of Ch14 §14.1.5 [Tier 2]; verified by verify_independent/verify_chi_holographic.py.)
12.4 Quantitative Analysis
12.4.1 The Hubble Tension Lies Outside the Scope of the §14.5.1 Action
The empirical Hubble tension (Riess et al. 2022 SH0ES km/s/Mpc vs Planck 2018 km/s/Mpc, a discrepancy) is not accounted for by the V2 Ch14 §14.5.1 lag-kernel biogenic-driving action under quantitative derivation. Under the §14.5.1 lag-kernel form , the local cosmological-constant value is the same global Planck-anchored value in all regions; biogenic overdensity modifies the evolution history of rather than the present-epoch . The quantitative consequence (engine derivation: GCT_Physics_Engine/src/protocol_o17_delta_h_local.py) is that at realistic SH0ES-volume-average overdensity (–, the Local Sheet to Laniakea scale), phantom-DE local evolution produces a smaller , hence larger , hence smaller SH0ES-inferred local — the opposite sign of the SH0ES Planck tension — at magnitude , three orders of magnitude smaller than the observed tension. The naive heuristic "phantom DE drives faster local expansion" does not survive the SH0ES inference pipeline (V2 Ch14 §14.5.4).
Scope of the Hubble-tension claim [Tier 3 / coupling-structure question]. The "Complexity Peak" interpretation of the SH0ES-vs-Planck gap is an alternative-coupling-structure hypothesis (option (i) of Open Problem O.17, V2 Ch14 §14.5.4 and Appendix H) in which local biogenic activity enhances the local value directly. That option is not currently derived from the §14.5.1 action and should be treated as forward-looking until O.17 closes. The alternative (option (ii) of O.17) is that the Hubble tension is sourced by physics outside the biogenic sector. Standard cosmology's Local Void hypothesis is the comparable peer reading; both are presently outside the GCT framework's quantitative scope.
Closure of the Biogenic-Gradient / Hubble-tension mapping requires either (a) deriving the option-(i) coupling from the GCT action explicitly, or (b) accepting that the framework's empirical anchors are the cosmic-mean phantom-phase signature (per V2 Ch14 §14.6.3) and the dipole-anisotropy direction (per V2 Ch14 §14.4.1), not the Hubble tension.
12.4.2 Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) Evidence — Quantitative Status [Tier 3]
The biogenic-DE perturbation to the late-time linear growth factor produces a sign-consistent but magnitude-very-small modification of the standard Integrated Sachs-Wolfe signal (Sachs & Wolfe 1967; Crittenden & Turok 1996). The amplitude is derived from the V2 Ch14 §14.5.1 lag-kernel action (GCT_Physics_Engine/src/protocol_o17p_isw_amplitude.py): the growth-factor shift at the ISW kernel peak () is , propagating to a cosmic-mean ISW amplitude perturbation of (). The sign of the perturbation is consistent with the standard ISW direction (biogenic phantom DE enhances late-time potential decay enhances the ISW source ).
The biogenic-vs-gravitational cross-correlation differential — the more specific signature predicted by the inhomogeneous biogenic-DE hypothesis — is bounded by the product of the cosmic-mean perturbation and the bias-difference between biogenic-weighted and gravitational-mass-weighted galaxy tracers. For realistic (Hopkins et al. 2008 ApJS 175:356 for stellar-mass-weighted vs halo-mass-weighted galaxy samples), the differential cross-correlation amplitude is of the standard ISW signal — three to four orders of magnitude below the CMB-S4 + SPHEREx joint detectability threshold ().
Current Planck galaxy ISW measurements (Stölzner et al. 2018 ApJ 870:60; Hang et al. 2021 MNRAS 501:1481) constrain to precision; the biogenic-DE perturbation is therefore far below current sensitivity. CMB-S4 (operational 2030+) combined with SPHEREx galaxy surveys will sharpen the joint ISW precision by , but the predicted GCT signal remains below this future threshold. Direct detection of the biogenic-DE ISW perturbation would require a hypothetical post-CMB-S5 / 30 m-class spectroscopic survey combination, or alternatively a population-stacking strategy on stellar-mass-weighted galaxy samples to recover the signal via averaging across the SPHEREx footprint.
The §14.5.1 biogenic-driving action thus predicts a sign-consistent but magnitude-unobservable ISW perturbation under any near-future experimental program. The framework's empirical anchors remain the cosmic-mean phantom-phase signature (per V2 Ch14 §14.6.3) and the dipole-anisotropy direction (per V2 Ch14 §14.4.1); the ISW signal is a sign-level consistency check with the standard ISW direction, not a positively-detectable prediction at near-future sensitivity.
12.4.3 Roman Telescope Predictions (2027)
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will provide the definitive audit of this correlation.
- GCT Prediction [Tier 3 calibrated channel fingerprint]: will not be a smooth constant but will exhibit a non-linear phantom-phase deviation (the GCT-consistent reading per §12.1.2 — entering and remaining in the phantom regime, asymptoting to from below without literal crossing per V2 Ch14 §14.6.3). The operative Class-2 envelope is , correlated with the peak of the integrated star-formation and metallicity history and requiring Roman Year-10 / Stage-V low- precision below for a clean cosmic-mean test. The "non-linear dip" terminology denotes only a broad-reference CPL-extrapolation distinguishability sketch; the underlying does not return to from below within the GCT-pipeline disposition.
- Falsification: If a Roman Year-10 / Stage-V low- program excludes the phantom-directed Class-2 envelope or finds the coherent deviation at a redshift unrelated to the history of life, the Biogenic Correlation is falsified.
